Dr. Nazimul Hussain obtained his masters in ophthalmology (MS) in 1996 from Gauhati University and Diplomate of National Board (Ophthalmology) in 1997. He completed his fellowship training in vitreoretinal retinal disease (1997-98) from the prestigious L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India. During his fellowship, he was awarded the “Best Ophthalmology fellow”.
He worked as consultant in Smt. Kanuri Santhamma Retina Vitreous Centre, L.V. Prasad eye Institute, Hyderabad, India from 1998 – 2001. From 2001 -2003, he worked as an Asst. Medical Director and Vitreoretinal Surgeon in Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital Pvt. Ltd. From 2003 until December 2007, he was working as an Associate professor, Chief of Macula centre and Incharge Zeiss Laser training at Smt. Kanuri Santhamma Retina Vitreous Services, L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India.
During his professional life, Dr. Hussain was extensively involved in clinical and Basic research. He has been actively involved in Genetic study of Age related macular degeneration along with his colleagues in Molecular genetics. He has also collaborated in the animal studies. He has also been principal and Co- investigator in many Multicentre Clinical trials like the FAME study, Radial Optic neurotomy study, Proteomic and genetic study. He has published in 30 peer reviewed and 22 non peer reviewed journals. His contributions are seen in Investigative Ophthalmology in Visual Science (IOVS), American Journal of Ophthamology, Graefe’s Archives of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Japanese J ournal of Ophthalmology, Clinical and experimental ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Surgery Lasers and Imaging and many more. He has also contributed in 11 chapters in textbook.
Dr. Hussain has made more 150 presentations as an invited faculty in both national (India) and International conferences. He has also been awarded the “Alim Memorial Lecture” by the Bangladesh Ophthalmological Society in 2006. He has trained vitreoretinal fellows since 10 years and was actively involved in the research projects of Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry. He is a reviewer for many international journals,namely Clinical Ophthalmology, Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavia, Journal of Ocular Therapeutics and Pharmacology, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Surgery lasers and Imaging and others.
His expertise are macular diseases, diabetic retinopathy and advanced vitreoretinal surgery. He has performed more 10,000 vitreoretinal surgeries in his professional life.
