Dr. Mrs. Urmil Verma
MBBS, FPATC, DRCOG, MRCOG, FRCOG (UK)
Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist

Dr. Mrs. Verma came to the UAE 23 years ago, in August 1981, from UK as Consultant and Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Sharjah Kuwaiti Hospital and subsequently moved to Al Zahra Hospital in June 1988 - nearly 16 years ago.

Prior to coming to the UAE, she spent 11 years in UK . She obtained all her postgraduate qualifications from Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of London - Diploma in November 73, Membership in January 74, and became a Fellow in June 87. She has also done special training and obtained her Diploma in Family Planning. While in the UK , Dr. Verma amassed vast experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, working in some of the biggest teaching and general hospitals there.

All along, she has made continuous efforts to update her knowledge by attending workshops and medical conferences in different parts of the world, especially in UK , USA , and Europe . She has kept pace with advances in medical technology and has trained in endoscopic procedures – diagnostic & operative laparoscopy, colposcopy and hysteroscopy from Germany , USA and UK .

She is very much interested in cervical cancer screening and its prevention as well as menopause and its associated problems including HRT, with special emphasis on the prevention of osteoporosis. To this end, she has consistently made efforts in increasing public awareness for regular annual checkups for women and the role of screening in prevention of diseases especially cervical and breast cancer, and debilitating osteoporosis. She has been on radio talk shows and has delivered talks to various susceptible groups.

As a gynaecologist, she routinely deals with ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies, tubal ligation, endometriosis, infertility problems, including polycystic ovarian disease and fibroids, laparoscopically. She is equally adept at colposcopy and hysteroscopy and the management of all related problems. She has recently been to UK and Australia ( Sydney ) to master the latest technique for treating specially selected cases of painful heavy periods in which all medical management has failed. This, “Uterine Balloon Therapy”, avoids the need for hysterectomy.

As an obstetrician over all these years she has dealt with innumerable cases of complicated pregnancies, deliveries and post delivery complications. Patients with previous bad obstetric histories, long periods of infertility and with congenital uterine abnormalities have been taken case of and have had babies. Some years ago, a woman with a very rare congenital abnormality, a double uterus - the first of its kind in UAE - delivered a baby at Al Zahra Hospital under her and has had her second baby too since. She has been here so long that she has delivered mothers and their daughters and daughter-in-laws and so much so that two baby girls delivered by her have had babies too!
