Dr. Sharma graduated from Jaipur Medical College in India in 1981. He joined the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India, and obtained his postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine in 1985. He successfully defended his doctoral thesis on nervous system deterioration in protein-energy malnourished animal and human populations and was awarded the post-doctoral DM degree in Neurology in 1988.

In 1989, he was appointed as Consultant in Critical Care Neurology and Assistant Professor of Neurology in the same Institute and was responsible for emergency care of newly admitted patients and teaching of postgraduate as well as post-doctoral neurology residents. Later, he worked in a superspecialty private hospital in Vizag, India, as Consultant Neurophysician until his relocation to the U.A.E.

He has served as Associate Editor of the prestigious journal "Neurology". He was awarded the E. Merck Gold Medal in 1988 for his work on the Shy-Drager Syndrome - a rare neurodegenerative disorder. He has several international publications to his credit.

Dr. Sharma joined Al Zahra Medical Centre, Dubai, and Al Zahra Hospital, Sharjah, in December 1997 and has been instrumental in the setting up of purpose-built neurophysiology laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment in both the institutions.

The areas of neurology which particularly interest him include neuropsychology, neurophysiology, epilepsy and demyelinative disorders like multiple sclerosis and GBS, and movement disorders. He has started a project aiming to collate demographic data on movement disorders in UAE and their treatment with electromyography-guided Botulinum A therapy.
