Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr. Attara graduated from one of the oldest universities in Egypt, the Cairo University, in 1970. Immediately thereafter, he proceeded to the U.K. for post graduate training and obtained Fellowships of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England in 1974, and of Edinburgh in 1975. This was followed by a Masters Degree from Athens, Greece, in 1991, and being elected Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Attara has been in orthopaedic practice since 1974, and as a consultant in the discipline since 1977. He has worked with several authorities of international renown, including, Prof. J.I.P. James (Spine Surgery), Sir Guy Pulvertaft (Hand Surgery), Prof. John Sharrard and Prof. George Lloyd Roberts (Paediatric Orthopaedics).
While Dr. Attara's U.K. assignments included the West Middlesex Hospital, Isleworth, the Yeovil, Bristol, and Exeter Hospitals in the South West, and the University Teaching Hospital in Leicester, his tenure in the Arabian Gulf commenced with his appointment as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Vice Chairman of the Orthopaedic Council in Kuwait in 1977. This was combined with teaching assignments in Orthopaedics at the Kuwait University Faculty of Medicine. While in Kuwait, he was instrumental in setting up the Gulf's first Scoliosis Centre. On re-location to the U.A.E., he assumed charge as Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Ministry of Health before joining Al Zahra in 1993.
With 25 years of experience in disc surgery, it is obvious that
Dr. Attara's special interest lies in Spine surgery. He is currently in the process of introducing Endoscopic Microdiscectomy - a procedure that has revolutionised the management of disc problems. He is equally adept at the management of sports Injuries, all kinds of arthroscopic procedures, paediatric orthopaedics, and surgery for congenital and paralytic deformities.
Dr. Attara has contributed to several orthopaedic journals, and continues to travel extensively and remain current with each new development in orthopaedics.
