A graduate of the Georg August University, Gottingen, Prof. Lepsien obtained his doctorate in 1979 and German Facharzt in General Surgery in 1982. Following a research tenure at the Laboratory for GI Motility, Iowa University, USA, he held senior appointments with prestigious German hospitals. In the 182-bed Surgical Unit in Gottingen, he was Deputy Director and Head of Surgical Endoscopy, GI Motility Laboratory, and Paediatric Surgery. Prior to joining Al Zahra, he was Head of Surgery at the Armed Forces Hospital in Kuwait.
Prof. Lepsien's interest in laparoscopic procedures began in 1990, and since 1992, he has been an instructor in Laparoscopic Surgery for the German Surgical Society. He was instrumental in establishing training programs for laparoscopic surgery at Gottingen, where a large number of Middle Eastern colleagues also received training. His efforts to promote modern surgical methods have earned him several national and international awards.
Prof. Lepsien's expertise covers all kinds of minimally invasive surgical procedures in the neck, axilla, chest, abdomen, and abdominal wall, in children and adults. He specialises in the surgical management of obesity and is one of the few certified trainers for Laparoscopic Gastric Banding in the world. In addition, his special interests include the surgical management of thyroid and breast disorders, minimally invasive repair of abdominal wall and groin hernias, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures for the upper and lower GI tract, motility disorders and reflux disease.
