OPHTHALMOLOGY
The Department of Ophthalmology uses modern equipment for a variety of diagnostic purposes and surgical procedures.
It has gained an enviable reputation for commitment and competence, and a vast clientele extending all over the Arabian Gulf.
Cataract surgery with intraocular lens implants, corneal grafts and glaucoma surgery are routinely carried out. In a number of cases, all three or four such procedures are performed in a single operation called a triple or quadruple procedure. In addition, Diode and Yag lasers are employed for the treatment of retinal diseases as well as other conditions requiring laser therapy.
Following the success of refractive surgery (radial keratotomy), Al Zahra was the first in the UAE to introduce the SummitŪ Excimer Laser for the correction of short sightedness. This has been recently upgraded to the third generation SVS Apex Plus System. SummitŪ is also the first Excimer laser manufacturer to be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The new SVS Apex Plus System, with its improved laser delivery technique, allows correction of myopia (near-sightedness) ranging from -1.00 to -30.00 dioptres, hypermetropia (farsightedness) of upto +6.00 dioptres, and astigmatism of upto -5.00 dioptres.
In addition to performing all kinds of eye surgery, the department also provides computerised assessment of corneal topography, field testing for glaucoma, ultrasound scanning of the eye, fluorescence angiography, artificial eyes, and the fitting of contact lenses. There are also facilities for biometry and computerised eye testing for prescription glasses.
